Urban Strategies received the call for action in May 2014 from
numerous offices including the White House,
FEMA, DHS, and HHS regarding the
crises associated with the unaccompanied
Children crossing the southern border. They were seeking organizations that could
provide culturally relevant bilingual housing to unaccompanied children for an 18
month period ending September 2015.
Together with our partners, Urban Strategies
mobilized its national and local partners to provide 328 beds for unaccompanied children for
the 18 month period. In June 2014, we received notification that our proposal
was approved to hire 350-400 people in 30 days, procure
millions of dollars of equipment, supplies, clothing, food, train staff, and renovate buildings. Licensure proceedings began, which resulted in capacity building for our 7 partner organizations.
